Preventive health Check-up: Why?
Preventive health check-up helps you to know your state of health; it helps you find your health related problems early, giving you a fair chance for better treatment and cure.
We need to understand that when we are healthy, our body functions better – helping us lead a productive work life and happier family and social life. Going for periodic check-ups or screening will take you one step closer to lead such healthy life, by keeping you and your clinician informed about the inner-workings of your body and what your body is demanding, further helping you to make wise decisions regarding your health and to make necessary corrections or adjustments in your lifestyle accordingly.
But it is common to put these check-ups at lower priority level because of the busy work schedule and rising cost of healthcare. But the truth is these regular health check-ups will save you plenty of money and time in the long run as they help in early detection and diagnosis, minimizing the risk of potential health issues that will further lower the need of more extensive medical care or surgery in the future.
The later your disease gets detected; you may need to go through more painful, extensive and expensive treatments that will consume your time and money; adversely affecting your productivity, personal life, financial health and quality of life. Proving the cliché, yet again, that Prevention is better than cure!!!
So just like investing in a retirement fund, it is extremely important to invest in your health today in order to enjoy a healthy and productive life tomorrow. We can achieve this by means of educating ourselves as much as we can about our health and taking the proper measures to take care of our bodies. The preventive health checks will play a major role in this as they will inform you about unforeseen and unknown health issues well in advance and they will be taken care of easily and early.
Preventive health check-up: Who, What & When?
Your age, family history, lifestyle choices (e.g. eating habits, type of work, exercise habits, activity level, addictions etc.), risks and your known health status, these are the factors that impact how often you should undergo a health check-up and what tests it should cover.
According to the American Medical Association, periodic health check-ups should be performed every 5 years for an adult until age 40 and every 1-3 years after age 40.
Check-ups incorporate several tests, including preventative screenings – Pathology Tests, Radiology (Imaging) Tests, Cardiology Tests and Physical Examinations, to check your current health and risks. Besides an ocerall examination, several standard tests are carried out to assess the function of your heart, lungs, digestive system, liver, kidney, immune system etc. Advance health checks also include cancer specific tests like PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen- to detect prostatic cancer) for men and PAP Smear test (to detect Cervical Cancer) and Sonomammography test (to detect breast cancer) for females. If any problems are found, your doctor will provide information on treatment plans and ways that you can prevent health issues in the future.
If you have any more specific health concerns, (e.g. Diabetes or Heart Diseases) then you can go for more specific health checks, which will help your doctor to assess your health status, to know how your treatment is working or to plan the further treatment regimen.
